It seems that procrastination is all around me. Why do people say they are going to do things, then end of up not doing them?
Is laziness the cause of procrastination? I don’t think so. I think people do adopt laziness as a strategy to put off personal growth. Others procrastinate as a way to keep from failing or as a way to manage their fear of success. Others procrastinate in an effort to be included. Others procrastinate because they have adopted that behavior and it’s tolerated.
Why is it that people won’t show up for their own lives and say what they mean, and then live within integrity? Whether in the workplace, or in a social or family circle, folks need to engage taking a look at their own behaviors.
Most often, the only thing that has a real chance of changing procrastinators is painful consequences. So why then, do we enable people and not hold them accountable for their actions? I see managers do this day in and day out because they don’t have the guts to step up and be a manager. Instead of holding people accountable, they dance around the subject, sugar coat what they need to say, or look the other way.
We can help procrastinators most by refusing to tolerate their entitled, often casual dismissal, of everyday commitments and responsibilities. They need to learn it’s an issue of respect.
